Premier League shows England’s class through its fine stadia

When the bid team for the 2018 World Cup visited England recently, the single thing that they could not have failed to spot was the sheer brilliance, as well as considerable character, of the magnificent stadia the country has to offer.

As someone who has had the joy of visiting grounds as far south as Portsmouth and as far north as Newcastle, and many others in-between, it never fails to amaze me just how incredible the infrastructure that supports Premier League football really is. And just like we have world-class teams like Chelsea – who are Premier League favourite odds to win – we also have world-class stadia like Stamford Bridge.

With older grounds such as Old Trafford, a stadium oozing history and tradition, providing a magnificent sight for those who approach them (albeit with a terrible view and location for away fans) and newer grounds such as the Emirates providing a luxurious if subdued environment within which to watch Premier League football, there can be few countries in the world that can compare their stadiums to those of our own Premier League.

Newcastle’s return to the Premiership has added yet another fantastic arena and fans up and down the country will be aware that England’s grounds are amongst the best in the world and currently play a significant part in making football so successful here.

With this in mind, the one question that must be asked is if the Premier League sides can produce world class stadia, why on earth is the centrepiece of the 2018 bid a stadium (coincidentally the only one that has been paid for by taxpayers across the UK) which cannot provide the standard that fans expect? Surely this decision is something which confounds the football betting odds, despite how impressive the new Wembley may look.

United to loan out youngsters

Some of Manchester United talented bunch of youngsters will be sent out on loan this season. Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly are two who will be loaned out to gain first team experience.

A number of lower Premiership clubs will be after the two players. Welbeck spent a short spell at Preston last season before he suffered an injury. He scored twice in his five games under Ferguson junior.

Cleverly has had loans at Leicester and last season at Watford. He was voted Watford’s player of the year at the end of the last campaign. Watford were understandably keen to take Cleverly again. Ferguson thinks that both players need to be playing in the top flight at this stage in their career’s to continue their development.

Newcastle have shown an interest in midfielder Cleverly, as they look to prove Premier league outright betting wrong and assemble a squad capable of competing in this league.

Welbeck is being chased by a host of clubs, Blackpool look to be leading the pack. They would promise Welbeck a regular starting spot. Ian Holloway’s men who are favourite for the drop according to the football betting odds have resorted to giving Francis Jeffers a trail in their search for a striker.

Welbeck has looked dangerous in the Carling Cup games he has played for United and scored a delicious lob on his Preston debut.

Other player who may be given a chance of gaining some league experience elsewhere may be Mame Biram Diouf and Gabriel Oberton. Senegalese striker Diouf was signed last season from Molde. French winger Oberton has been linked with a loan move to Rangers. Both have been used on United pre-season tour on the States, meaning both may be kept at Old Trafford and given some playing time there.

Spurs’ need is greater than Man City’s

Results in the Premier League last weekend whittled down the Champions League hopefuls to just two clubs and they now face each other at the City of Manchester Stadium in what is effectively Champions League play-off.

The build up to the game has seen much talk of launch pads to success, and the impact a new side finishing in the top fourth could have on the Premier League.

This has been the case with Manchester City in particular. If they secured fourth they would be able to offer the world’s best players Champions League football as well exorbitant wages.

However, the amount of cash available at City means they will eventually make the top four regardless of what happens this season. Sheikh Mansour has already shown he is prepared to continually throw money at the problem until he achieves his objective. Indeed, if Harry Redknapp is to be believed City don’t hold back when it comes to the transfer market.

So even if City fall at the final hurdle this week, and the football betting odds suggest they will, it will not be a disaster. Roberto Mancini, or whoever is in charge, will have a limitless amount of money at his disposal in order to achieve his objective next season.

Spurs, meanwhile, have a lot more to lose in my opinion. Redknapp has built at talented squad at White Hart Lane and although it was expensively assembled, he knows that every player has their price and already the vultures are circling overhead, ready to pick off the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.

The last time Spurs finished fifth they were heavily tipped to push on the following year, but made a terrible start to the following season and were bottom of the league by the time the clocks went back. They can’t afford for that to happen again. Failing to make fourth now could see the team break up. City, on the other hand, would spend big to ensure they stay in the top four, meaning the door to the will be shut again, leaving Spurs back among the likes of Aston Villa and Everton, banging their heads on that glass ceiling.

Meanwhile, the World Cup 2010 odds still make England third favourites as the big kick-off looms.
