Nigeria’s World Cup meltdown rumbles on
England fans who are still sulking after their World Cup exit should spare a thought for Nigeria supporters as their national side approaches meltdown.
Of course Nigeria were never up there with the favourite odds to win world cup, but the side were poor in the tournament and failed to progress beyond the group stage, but no one could have expected what happened next.
Upon their return home Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, announced the national team would be suspended from competition for two years and dissolved the country’s football association.
Now FIFA, always keen to avoid political interference in the sport, has warned that it could expel Nigeria if the plan goes ahead.
It’s certainly a bizarre situation and not one you would have placed a world cup free bet on. According to representatives of the president, the move is aimed at allowing football in the country to “put its house in order” but quite how this can be done without actually playing the game remains unclear.
For its part, FIFA has taken a cautious approach. Although the organisation warned that the ultimate sanction would be expulsion, it also pointed out that it would be “premature to speak further”, hardly surprising given the president’s threat of suspension is yet to be enacted.
However, it seems unlikely the players will take kindly to what is going on. The move will effectively end the international careers of some of the older squad members, while the younger one will be deprived of vital experience during a key point in their development.
And then there are the fans. How will they react to a move which will, at best, mean their side does not compete in the next African Cup of Nations? It seems highly unlikely they will be happy about the decision to suspend the side, no matter how poorly they did at the World Cup.
At the moment it seems that the move, aimed at improving football in Nigeria, will only harm it.

09/11 Vietnam Football Shirt
Vietnam have announced the new football shirt for their national team for the 2009-11 seasons.
The Vietnamese Football Association signed a five year extension with Nike back in January, a partnership that is worth $5million and will last until 2014.
The shirt is in our opinion much nicer than the previous version. Unfortunately, it is not currently available for sale, but rest assured we are working hard to add it to the UKSoccershop product range for you.
If you are interested in buying this shirt, it would be useful if you could leave a comment below declaring your interest as that would be useful in helping us to persuade the brands to carry this shirt.
